Educating Children In Nepal

Our Aims

Gorkha Learning for Life is a charity dedicated to helping the people of Pokharatok, a village in Gorkha, Nepal, bring education and health to their children. It has done this by raising money to build and run a school in the village. We run a sponsorship scheme: pupils £15 per year - providing them with uniform, bags, books and tiffin (lunch), we also have syndicates that sponsor staff wages. We also run two clinics per month. 

The school is complete!

We now support over 200 children to have an education. We provide eight members of staff, soon to be nine as well as a water tap, which you can see in the foreground, and we have toilets.

In our old building we have a nursery/reception class and run a clinic twice a month.

What next?

We have several ideas – a new school, support a hearing impaired school or supplying government nursery’s classes with equipment.

Volunteers needed for school

We need volunteers willing to teach at the school. There are now six classes ranging from our reception/nursery class to Year 5. The reception class is well resourced and the staff are beginning to enjoy working in a practical way. The other teachers are interested in integrating practical work with their theoretical style. If you think you can help out in any of these areas we would love to hear from you.

Want to Help?

You can sponsor a teacher, or a child, either as an individual, or as part of a syndicate.

You can support our building fund by attending one of our fund-raisers, or by running an event of your own. The school is well on the way to completion; the roof went on in January 2006. The new building will house our library, staff-room and classes 1 to 5. The old building will continue to be used for our nursery class, with a designated adult literacy classroom and clinic room.
